Why MIPC is Important:

The incidence of healthcare associated infections literally and figuratively plague all Maine hospitals and put all hospital patients at risk. This problem is made worse by the fact that more resistant bacteria are appearing in hospitals all the time.

Before now, most hospitals in Maine had been trying to take on the challenge of fighting healthcare associated infections on its own.  Because all the hospitals face the same clinical issues, and because it is important to address this problem quickly, the MPIC was created in 2008 so that hospitals could work together to tackle this important issue.  In other areas of the country, regional strategies have been much more successful than individual hospitals working alone.
