Maine Pressure Ulcer Prevention Collaborative

Quality Counts is currently working in several areas to help improve hospital care through our participation in the Aligning Forces for Quality initiative, and with support from nurse leaders around the state. One of the areas of focus is to help prevent pressure ulcers, through the Maine Pressure Ulcer Prevention (PUP) Collaborative.  Read more about this effort in the Maine Pressure Ulcer Prevention Collaborative - Concept Paper or click to access information and presentations from the Sept 29 kick-off event.

The goal of Maine's PUP Collaborative is to improve patient-centered care by preventing pressure ulcers in institutionalized patients by supporting the implementation of a set of key strategies that aim to drive the incidence of pressure ulcers towards zero.  Nurse leadership and the involvement of bedside nursing staff are keys to the success of this initiative, and a focus on nurse leadership is a critical element of the improvement strategy

Partners in the Program:
Quality Counts is partnering in this effort with the Maine Quality Forum, the Maine DHHS Division of Licensing and Regulatory Services , and the Organization of Maine Nurse Executives (OMNE) to lead Maine's PUP Colalborative.

NDNQI Offers Online Training for Pressure Ulcer Prevention

“The National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) has an excellent online training on Pressure Ulcer for nurses and CNAs. It is free and can be completed for continuing education credits. The Maine PUP Collaborative found that involvement of Certified Nurse Aides is critical to success in pressure ulcer prevention. Many facilities are using this NDNQI online training module on Pressure Ulcers to expand the learning opportunities for their staff to include CNAs as well as nurses. Why Pressure Ulcer Prevention

Why Pressure Ulcer Prevention is Important:
Preventing pressure ulcers is not only an important way to improve patient-centered care, but also an opportunity to decrease the use of expenses health care resources.  Pressure ulcers can be fully prevented with appropriate monitoring and well-documented prevention strategies.

Data on pressure ulcer prevalence is currently reported by Maine hospitals and long-term care (LTC) facilities to the Maine Quality Forum and to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This CMS data and the MQF data on pressure ulcers suggests that there is considerable variation in pressure ulcer prevalence across facilities, suggesting that there may be important opportunities for improvement.

The Maine Pressure Ulcer Prevention Collaborative focuses on a set of 6  "key changes", or PUP Change Concepts, for preventing  pressure ulcers.  These changes outline key expectations for nursing and provider staff at hospitals and Long Term Care facilities.
